FERNLEY H. DAMSTROM

Fernley H. Damstrom, born in Cuero, Texas in 1923, graduated from the Army Air Force’s pilot training at Drew Field, TX on 29 July 1943. He was assigned to the 7th Fighter Squadron at Tacloban, Leyte in late December 1943. While flying the P-38 Lightning, he scored his first aerial victory on 2 November 1944 when he downed an Oscar over Ormoc Bay and 9 days later, brought down a Tojo in the Ponson Island area. He hit his stride in December, shooting down 2 Nicks and a Zeke 52 on the 7th, 2 Zeke 52s on the 15th and ended the month by destroying an Oscar on the 20th. Unfortunately, Damstrom was killed 11 April 1945 during take off from Laong Airfield, Luzon, Philippines. His Decorations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters.
